When the counting finished at the Kavundampalayam strongroom on the morning of 8 May 2026, the loudest cheer in the Coimbatore district returns went up for R.D. Kanimozhi. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam candidate had polled 146,466 votes — 40.24 per cent of the votes cast — and won by a margin of 42,140 over the DMK incumbent. It was the largest victory margin TVK recorded in any Coimbatore-district seat. And it was delivered by a first-time woman candidate.
Kanimozhi's profile is, in many ways, the profile TVK has been trying to build for itself. She is not from a political dynasty. She is not from a film background. Before her candidature, she had spent close to a decade in women's self-help-group federations and in legal-aid clinics that worked with garment-factory workers in the Coimbatore industrial belt. Her recruitment to TVK in early 2025 was unannounced and unspectacular; her selection as Kavundampalayam candidate, when it came in early 2026, surprised even the constituency's local press.
The surprise did not last. Kavundampalayam — a constituency that combines the Kavundampalayam municipality with stretches of Vadavalli, Edayarpalayam and the western suburbs — is demographically female-leaning. Women voters outnumber men in several wards. The seat had been held by the DMK since 2021, but with growing complaints about civic infrastructure, water supply, and the slow rollout of women's welfare schemes. Kanimozhi's campaign leaned into precisely these gaps. Her stump speech, in Tamil that was direct without being theatrical, focused on three demands: piped water to every Kavundampalayam ward, a women's industrial training centre in the constituency, and faster grievance redressal at the police-station level.
The 42,140-vote margin is not a freak result. It is the product of three converging forces. First, the broader Kongu swing toward TVK described in this column earlier. Second, women voters specifically — across age groups — turning out for a woman candidate offering specific, locally-grounded promises rather than the abstract welfare-bag pitch the established parties had recycled. Third, Sampathkumar's booth machinery, which in Kavundampalayam was tested at its highest density.
What the result signals is more than a personal victory. Tamil Nadu has a deeper history of women in legislative office than is sometimes acknowledged — from Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar in the Madras Legislative Council in the 1930s, to the parade of women MLAs the DMK and AIADMK have sent to Fort St. George since the 1960s, to Jayalalithaa's six terms as Chief Minister. But women's representation has always been concentrated in symbolic and welfare portfolios, rarely in the high-margin, mass-base seats that signal genuine political capital.
Kanimozhi's Kavundampalayam mandate is exactly such a seat. It is not a reserved constituency. It is not a token nomination. It is the largest TVK win in the district her party has chosen as its Kongu capital. In a cabinet where Sampathkumar holds BC Welfare and Vijay holds the Chief Ministership, the Kavundampalayam MLA is the third pole of the party's western leadership — and the first sign that TVK intends women's representation to be measured not by seats reserved but by margins delivered.
The number to remember is 42,140. The name to remember is Kanimozhi.
