Singanallur is a constituency that lives two different decades at once. Drive west along Avinashi Road and you reach TIDEL Park Coimbatore, the 9.5-acre IT SEZ that anchors the city's tech corridor. Software workforces, BPOs, and the airport-Peelamedu real-estate band start at its gates. Drive south-east along the Trichy Road belt and within twenty minutes you are at the edge of Vellalore — Coimbatore Corporation's principal solid-waste landfill, a site whose name has appeared in pollution-board notices, NGT orders, and ward-level protest petitions for the better part of two decades.

AC 121 holds both inside the same boundary line. That is the political geography Sri Giri Prasath of TVK inherited on 4 May 2026 when he polled 84,163 votes — roughly 38 percent — and defeated the runner-up by 19,139. The seat had swung between AIADMK and DMK since the 1990s; the AIADMK incumbent K.R. Jayaram was pushed to third.

The duality of the constituency is not metaphorical. TIDEL Park, the Coimbatore International Airport, the Singanallur intercity bus terminus, the ESI Medical College Hospital, and the Sungam Lake recreation belt all sit within AC 121's 18 corporation wards. So do the residential pockets along Trichy Road whose groundwater tests have repeatedly flagged leachate contamination from the Vellalore site. White-collar IT renters in Peelamedu and home-owning Kongu families in Singanallur proper vote in the same election with completely different expectations from a sitting MLA.

The Vellalore landfill is the older grievance. The site has been the corporation's primary dumping ground since 2005, taking nearly 1,000 tonnes a day at peak. Fires — some triggered by methane build-up, some by sub-contractor practice — have repeatedly forced evacuation of the nearest five villages. The 2018 fire ran for forty days. NGT directives in 2020 and 2023 ordered scientific capping, leachate treatment plants, and a shift to bio-mining. Implementation has been partial. Sewage flows into Singanallur Lake from the same corporation network have compounded the perception that the eastern half of the constituency carries the city's environmental cost while the western half collects its IT dividends.

This is why Sri Giri Prasath's professional background matters. He is the State Advocate Wing Deputy Coordinator of TVK — the No. 2 functionary in the party's lawyers' cell. The 2026 affidavit lists his occupation as "Advocate Profession"; he graduated B.A. B.L. (Hons) from Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University's School of Excellence in Law in 2007. Vellalore is, fundamentally, a litigation problem inside an administrative one: NGT compliance, environmental clearance challenges, pollution control board notices, and citizen-filed PIL pressure. A first-time MLA with a law degree and direct lines into TVK's state legal cell is a meaningfully different escalator than a generalist newcomer would have been.

The TIDEL Park side of the seat asks the opposite question. The IT corridor's complaints are about water tankering, road resurfacing on Villankurichi Road, predictable power at SEZ load, and a commuter rail link to Mettupalayam Road. None of these are litigation problems. They are coordination problems with the corporation, TANGEDCO, and the Coimbatore-Salem rail division.

Singanallur's MLA has to be two officials at once. The 19,139-vote margin gives Sri Giri Prasath the runway to be both — and the obligation to prove that AC 121 is no longer a swing seat but a held one.
