Coimbatore North — Assembly Constituency 118 — is one of those seats that explains Tamil Nadu more than it explains itself. Carved out of the larger Coimbatore municipal sprawl during the 2008 delimitation, AC 118 covers the city's northern wards: Saibaba Colony, R.S. Puram fringes, Ganapathy, Tatabad, parts of Peelamedu, and the textile mill quarters that built the Kongu economy. It is urban, middle-class, and politically loud.
For most of its short electoral life, North was an AIADMK seat. P. R. G. Arunkumar carried it in 2011 and 2016 with the kind of margins that mill-town loyalty produces. The DMK never quite cracked it. When the 2021 wave returned the DMK to Fort St. George, AC 118 went the other way — Vanathi Srinivasan won it for the BJP by 1,536 votes over Mayura Jayakumar of the DMK, a margin so thin it could fit inside a single polling booth.
Vanathi's victory was less about the BJP and more about Coimbatore's discomfort with both Dravidian majors. She was the BJP National Mahila Morcha president, a Coimbatore woman who had been quietly building a base since 1997. Her five years as MLA produced steady ward-level work but few headlines. The seat sat in a kind of political waiting room.
Then came TVK. When actor Vijay launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam on 2 February 2024, Coimbatore was on the shortlist of cities where the party would have to prove itself or perish. V. Sampathkumar, a Coimbatore-rooted organiser with cross-party credibility, was given the district. He spent fourteen months on booth-level cadre recruitment, ward conferences, and the unglamorous work of voter list verification.
The 26 April 2025 Western Region Booth Conference at SNS College — 8,000 cadres in a single hall — was the first signal that something had shifted. By the time nominations closed for the 2026 Assembly polls, TVK had a candidate, a machinery, and a story.
The 2026 result was not a wave; it was an alignment. AIADMK's traditional Gounder base, frustrated by the AIADMK-BJP arithmetic, drifted to TVK. Younger voters in Saibaba Colony and Tatabad — first-time voters who had grown up on Vijay's films — turned out at rates the BJP could not match. DMK's anti-incumbency at the state level capped its ceiling. North flipped to TVK by a comfortable five-figure margin.
What AC 118 represents now is not just a seat. It is the headquarters of a new political identity — the city where Sampathkumar, sworn in as BC Welfare Minister on 21 May 2026, sits as the senior-most TVK voice in the Western belt. From AIADMK stronghold to BJP toehold to TVK capital, Coimbatore North has done in fifteen years what most constituencies take a generation to do: it has chosen three different futures, and rejected two of them.
