Mettuppalayam does not behave like the rest of Coimbatore district. Drive 35 kilometres north of the city and the landscape changes physically before it changes politically: the Bhavani river opens out, the Nilgiri foothills push the horizon up, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway begins its rack-and-pinion climb, and the assembly seat — AC 111 — tilts away from textile-Coimbatore toward plantation-Nilgiris.

On 4 May 2026, this hinge constituency elected N. Sunil Anand of TVK with 75,413 votes — roughly 31 percent share, a margin of about 7,778 over the DMK runner-up. The three-term former AIADMK MLA O.K. Chinnaraj came third. It is the first time since the seat was constituted in 1952 that neither the DMK family nor the AIADMK family holds Mettuppalayam.

The winner's biography itself is the first clue to the result. Sunil Anand is the only Kannadiga elected to the 16th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. His great-grandfather Boregowda walked into the Nilgiri foothills almost a century ago, escaping a famine in Tumakuru district of present-day Karnataka. The family settled, then prospered — coconut plantations in the Bhavani belt, hotels along the Ooty road, real estate as the town pushed outward. His grandfather Lingaiah served as Chairman of Mettuppalayam Municipality. By the time the 2026 ticket was decided, Sunil Anand had spent close to three decades as a ground organiser, the last ten in AIADMK before crossing to TVK in mid-2025.

That biography maps neatly onto the constituency's voter base. AC 111 is a Backward Classes-heavy electorate. The Kongu Vellalar Gounder vote anchors the rural west of the seat. The Vokkaliga and other Karnataka-origin clusters — a long-settled diaspora the rest of Tamil Nadu rarely registers — anchor pockets around Mettuppalayam town and Karamadai. Muslim weavers and traders form a quarter of the municipal electorate. The Christian plantation workforce becomes visible the closer you get to the foothills. A non-Dravidian-major candidate could only win this seat by stitching across all four; Sunil Anand did exactly that.

The issue terrain helped. Mettuppalayam's flashpoints are not the ones Chennai newsrooms cover. Drinking-water supply to upland villages. Bhavani river silting and the flooding it brings after each monsoon. The narrow-gauge to broad-gauge debate around the NMR. Elephant corridor encroachment between Karamadai and the Sirumugai forest range — eight man-animal conflict incidents in 2025 alone. Coconut price support when southern markets crash. Sunil Anand's pitch on each of these came from someone whose family had been farming and trading in the same belt since before independence.

The Vijay Joseph factor sealed it. In his only post-result interview to Deccan Chronicle he was disarmingly direct: "Voters only cast their votes on the Vijay Joseph factor rather than focusing on a candidate's background — language, origin or anything else. Trusting Vijay, voters cast their votes for my candidature, leading to my victory."

For Coimbatore North minister V. Sampathkumar's constituency reach, Mettuppalayam matters operationally. AC 111 sits at the northern lip of the city's commuter belt; commerce, water, electricity and tribal-welfare files cross between the two desks daily. Sunil Anand and Sampathkumar will work the same district file table from opposite ends — urban core and plantation gateway — for the next five years.
